Got A Thing Need A Thing

Who we are

Got A Thing Need A Thing started with a simple idea. Most of us own things we only use a few times a year — a pressure washer, a kayak, a tent. And most of us have needed one of those things and had to buy it instead of just renting it for a weekend. Somebody has already paid the money for that gear. It’s just sitting there, while someone else could be using it. What I like to say is: make that gear make money for you.

GTNT connects the two: people renting out what they already own to people nearby who need it for a day or a week. Owners earn from gear that would otherwise sit idle. Renters get what they need without paying full price for something they’ll use once.

We’re a small, owner-run company, and we built GTNT around one belief: both people in a rental should know exactly who they’re dealing with, what it costs, and what happens if something goes wrong. So that’s what this page is — all of it, written out plainly.

For owners — how you make money

It’s your gear, and you stay in charge of it. You list it, you manage it, and you decide everything about how it’s rented:

  • How much — you set the price, by the day, weekend or week.
  • When it goes out and comes back — you set the pickup and return hours that work for you.
  • What you expect — you describe the item, its condition and anything a renter needs to know.
  • Who rents it — every request comes to you first. You accept the ones you’re comfortable with and decline the ones you’re not.
  • When you need it back for yourself — pause your listing any time you want to use it, until whatever date you choose. Renters see it as in use and can join a waitlist, and they’re emailed when it’s available again.
  • How you get the word out — once your listing is live you get your own link and a share button, so you can post it anywhere you like.

What it costs you: listing is free, and there’s no cost at all unless something rents. When it does, GTNT’s standard fee is 15% of the booking total, with a $3.50 minimum. For example, rent something out at $25 a day for a week: the booking comes to $175, GTNT’s fee is $26.25, and you keep $148.75.

If a renter cancels at the last minute, you still get part of the booking — and if you’re the one who has to cancel, the renter gets every penny back.

For renters — how you save

  • Rent it for the day or week you actually need it, instead of buying something that spends the rest of the year in a garage.
  • You pay the listed price plus sales tax. There’s no service fee added on top — GTNT’s fee comes out of the owner’s side.
  • Cancel 24 hours or more before pickup and you get a full refund.

How both sides are protected

  • Everyone is a real, verified person. Owners verify their ID before they can list, and renters before they can book. Verification is handled by Stripe; GTNT never sees or stores your ID document.
  • Individuals only. Everyone on GTNT is an individual, 18 or older — not a rental company.
  • Every listing is reviewed by a person before it goes public.
  • A security deposit protects the owner. A refundable hold of 25% of the rental price is placed on the renter’s card and released when the item comes back without a problem. It’s a hold, not insurance.
  • Photos on both ends. Both sides can add condition photos at pickup and at return, so there’s a record if anything is ever disputed.
  • Reviews, both ways. After a rental, the owner and renter can review each other, and the item gets its own rating.
  • A person decides disputes — not an algorithm.

Common questions

How much does it cost to list something?

Nothing. Listing is free, and you only pay GTNT's fee when something rents.

What does GTNT take when something rents?

15% of the booking total, with a $3.50 minimum, taken from the owner's side — so a $25-a-day item rented for a week is a $175 booking, a $26.25 fee, and $148.75 to the owner. Renters pay no service fee.

Can I still use my own equipment?

Yes. It's still yours. Pause your listing any time you need it, until whatever date you choose, and renters can join a waitlist to be told when it's back.

Do I have to accept every request?

No. Every request comes to you first, and you choose who rents your gear.

Is the security deposit insurance?

No. It's a refundable hold of 25% of the rental price on the renter's card, released when the item comes back without a problem.

How do I know who I'm dealing with?

Owners and renters both verify their identity with Stripe before they can list or book, and everyone on GTNT is an individual, 18 or older.

What if I need to cancel?

Renters who cancel 24 hours or more before pickup get a full refund. If an owner cancels, the renter is always refunded in full.

What happens if there's a dispute?

A person reviews it, using the condition photos and the booking record.
